This term, the entire Year 7 cohort took part in the second annual Spelling BEE. Organised by the English Department, this competition set out to find the most prolific speller in the year group. Pupils started to prepare for the competition during form time at the start of term. A number of spelling activities took place and every pupil was tested on their knowledge of key curriculum words. After these initial quizzes, the top girl and boy were selected from each from to represent that form in the semi-finals.
From the extremely tough semi-finals, eight pupils were selected to represent the year in the final.
The eagerly-anticipated final took place in the Senior Hall on Wednesday 16th December and was attended by the entire year. The atmosphere was electric and there was a real sense of friendly competition. After a tense number of rounds, the competition was finally won by Esther Matey who demonstrated superb knowledge and a calm demeanour. As part of her prize, Esther was given £20 worth of high street gift vouchers and had the privilege of having her name engraved on the Spelling BEE shield.
Second place was won by Chloe and Ben claimed third. All the finalists tried extremely hard with some difficult spellings and were commended for their efforts.
