This autumn half term saw the return of the popular production ‘Woodchurch Has Talent’. Pupils from years 8 and 9 went through gruelling auditions towards the end of September with 54 pupils auditioning in total. With such an array of talent on offer, the difficult decision of dwindling the acts down to 14 fell to the Music department in time for the final event which took place on the night of Tuesday 15th October.
Despite competing with England’s crucial world cup qualifier, the event drew in well over 300 pupils and parents who were rewarded with an evening of real quality performances; ranging from dance solos, break-dancing, human drum machines, guitar virtuosos and some excellent singing. Mr. Emmitt was in a particularly foul mood and made Simon Cowell look like a Saint as he picked out faults in the acts. Mr. Galloway gave some very useful feedback to the acts, though we think he really fancied competing for the prize himself. Just as well head judge, Mrs. Hassall, was there to keep them in check as the night progressed.
After all the performances were completed, the audience spoke and their three finalists were chosen by public vote. Vocalist Evan and singing duo Sophie and Megan were selected first before solo vocalist Leyla was nominated as the last finalist. After a nail-biting final performance from each act, the judges had the final say and decided Leyla’s moving performance of ‘Your Song’ by Ellie Goulding was the strongest act of the night and crowned Leyla the ‘Woodchurch Has Talent’ champion for 2013. It was nice to see Layla being congratulated not only by her family, but also the two acts that came runners-up before being presented with her trophy by head judge, Mrs. Hassall.
A big “well done” goes out to all the acts who took part from the auditions to the actual event and to all the staff who helped out and gave their time to make it a special night for everyone involved.
