Friday the 10th of May saw eleven of our Premier League Reading Star pupils take a trip to Everton Footbal Club’s Training ground, Finch Farm where they met French defender Sylvain Distin. The explosion of media attention at the gates greeted us with no surprise as our visit coincided with the world's media awaiting the press conference of David Moyes officially announcing his move to replace Sir Alex Ferguson as the manager of Manchester United.

Finch Farm was a hive of activity as we were shown through to the education suite to our awaiting host Sylvain Distin. Pupils shared with him their reviews of recent books including their more recent read, Resistance by Ann Jungman. Michael told Sylvain how the book (set in Holland during World War 2) is amazing and he has enjoyed reading it with his Mum, whilst Brandon discussed the sad aspect of Jan’s Dad being sent to prison. The boys spoke with confidence and enthusiasm and were very passionate when discussing both their reviews and their love of football!

Sylvain commented on the excellent behaviour and manners of the pupils and how thrilled he was with their enthusiasm... but what did the pupils think?

“It was a really good experience and interesting; it will be a really cool memory” Joe 7YN

“I think everyone was nervous about meeting him, but it was amazing!” Aaron 7YW

“It was extremely excellent and has made me want to read a lot more.” Josh 7X

Pupils are looking forward to our next venture, a trip to the National Museum of Football where they will have the opportunity to work with the resident poet and see their ideas and poetry displayed in one of the galleries!
