Premier Reading Stars

Last week saw the 2012 launch in Woodchurch of our new reading challenge initiative... Premier League Reading Stars. On a smaller scale, nationally Theo Walcott joined Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall to launch Premier League Reading Stars at the Emirates Stadium.

The key outcome of Premier League Reading Stars is that it motivates pupils to start reading and even to become involved in encouraging others to read. The related activities focus on both reading and talking about reading, therefore helping the pupils to apply a wide range of reading, speaking and listening skills that link to the English curriculum. The programme also covers writing skills, with pupils being encouraged to use their experiences to write their own stories. The texts introduced to the pupils include fiction, poetry and non-fiction, with the aim of increasing the range of reading that they are willing to tackle.

Over 20 Premier League Footballers are ambassadors for the scheme and pupils can choose to take reading challenges from players such as Tim Cahill or Charlie Adam... it’s all causing quite a stir especially as we are expecting special guests to come to talk to pupils about what they are reading, but we can’t say any more it’s very hush hush!
