Green School to Replace Woodchurch High

by Sue McCann, Birkenhead News

WIRRAL Council’s Cabinet this week gave the go-ahead to proposals for a new school that will be environmentally state of the art – ready to meet the challenge of climate change.

Cllr Gill Gardiner, Liberal Democrat member for environment, said: “This new school is a wonderful opportunity to embrace all the latest environmentally-friendly technology and help the local environment and economy.

“Its design and building will conform to all up-to-date standards for sustainability, drainage systems, water systems, energy-saving and, as part of the tendering process, the successful contractor will be required to demonstrate the proposals will include a local labour/training scheme.

“The contractor will also be encouraged to source materials and sub-contractors locally to support local businesses. As part of the tender, they will need to demonstrate a substantial local labour/training scheme to promote the employment of school leavers and local residents, which is all good news for local people and jobs.”

The new school, which will replace Woodchurch High, is part of the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme. It still requires planning and building regulation approval before work starts on site and pre-application discussions are already under way.

Celebration time over new school

By Homa Khaleeli, Liverpool Echo

STAFF and students celebrated after councillors agreed they should get £23.5m worth of government cash to rebuild their crumbling school.

Pupils from Woodchurch high school in Carr Bridge Road could have a new building by 2009.

Government education chiefs still have to approve the grant under the Building Schools for the Future programme, but that is expected to be little more than a formality.

Headteacher of the Wirral school Beryl Holt said she was absolutely delighted her students would finally be getting the school they deserved.

Ms Phillips said: "There are holes in the floor and crumbling walls and we have had to spend money which should have gone on teachers' salaries or equipment.
